Airport infrastructure finance is always under Capex pressures, so many demands on a finite source of capital or external funding. Balancing the financial needs and requirements of a growing airport with increasing regulations from both EU and government legislation is very demanding.
The increase of passenger demands landside at terminals for new security scanners, baggage systems, and the myriad other projects that are behind the scene of any airport terminal is never ending.
Other capital intensive requirement projects are sometimes postponed or put on indefinite hold. The longer they stay on hold, the more expensive they normally become, the unwritten rule of CFO’s!
With Net Zero signed by the great and the good of airports, airlines and aircraft manufacturers alike, the pressure from governments and the public to implement carbon reduction is growing.
With airlines moving to carbon neutral flights, the time scale of 2050, could well become 2040 in a couple of years again increasing pressure on capex across the board. The acceleration of expenditure on low or zero carbon equipment will and can only increase.
The charging of electric tugs, GPU’s, and now even de-icers, will simply intensify pressure on the old networks. New charging systems and battery back ups have to be installed. If you add this on to the normal list of projects that need replacing on a regular basis, for example air bridges, runway lighting, radar installations, and drone protection systems, the requirement for airport infrastructure finance can only increase.
If you think further for other infrastructure projects, for instance hangers, cargo facilities, fuel farms, virtual control towers, and even car parking facilities. All of these projects are capital intensive, and not all can be kicked into the long grass!
